Peace Corps Seeks Environment and Agriculture VolunteersThe Peace Corps Seattle Regional Office is experiencing a shortage of applicants with environmental and agricultural experience. If you would like to help Peace Corps recruit through community talks and other activities, you might want to keep an eye out for people with these skills. Candidates for these positions have degrees in agriculture or environment related fields, including the natural sciences, or they may instead have experience in gardening or farming. Environment volunteers work on a variety of grass-roots projects, such as bringing potable water to communities or establishing forest conservation plans. They promote environmental education through recycling, wildlife protection and park management. Qualified applicants hold degrees in a variety of fields, including forestry, biology, environmental science, park administration, education, and engineering. Applicants have a demonstrated interest in the environment through their work histories or volunteer experiences. Agriculture volunteers work with farmers to improve local diets and increase income in environmentally sound ways. They promote fisheries, beekeeping, organic vegetable gardening and nutrition education. They also work with NGOs (non-governmental organizations), farmer cooperatives and agribusinesses to improve basic business practices. Qualified applicants may hold degrees in animal sciences, agribusiness or agriculture. An unrelated degree or no degree at all may be applicable if the applicant has experience in agriculture or gardening; often such an applicant has a history of backyard gardening of has lived on a farm. Peace Corps is recruiting now for volunteers to leave in the spring and summer of 2004. In addition to environment and agriculture applicants, Peace Corps is always in need of English teachers and health educators. If you meet individuals who want to leave before September, please have them contact the Seattle Regional Office at (800) 424-8580, option 1. |
